User Guide to Internet Access at the Rochester Hills Public Library 1. The Internet provides access to information beyond the confines of the library's collections. Since the library has no control over the Internet, it assumes no responsibility for the quality, currency or accuracy of any information accessed via the Internet. Patrons who access the Internet at the library do so at their own discretion. 2. The library does not restrict Internet access except as required by law. The library supports the Library Bill of Rights and the policies of the American Library Association and the Michigan Library Association as they apply to electronic resources. 3. Patrons are expected to comply with the Metro Net Acceptable Use Policy and the library's Code of Conduct. It is a violation of the Code of Conduct to display materials that are considered obscene by contemporary local community standards or that contain sexually explicit matter considered harmful to minors. 4. Parents and guardians have the primary responsibility for their children's use of the Internet in the library. The library recommends that parents and guardians actively participate in their children's use of the Internet by: * Giving their children Internet guidelines, such as My Rules For Online Safety * Using the Just For Kids and Homework Helper pages on the library's Web site (Just For Kids is the default page at Youth Room terminals.) * Participating in Internet safety programs * Recognizing that the software filters installed on Internet terminals in the Youth Room are designed, but are not guaranteed, to prevent the display of materials that are considered obscene or that contain sexually explicit matter considered harmful to minors.
