Technology Committee Meeting Minutes
January 15, 2008
Location: Livonia Civic Center Library
* Meeting called to order by Chair-Elect, Melanie
Bell at 9:35 a.m.
* Introductions (see attendee list below)
* Minutes from November 20, 2007 meeting approved
with no changes.
TLN UPDATE (Angie Michelini):
* Next SAM user group meeting is Wed. Feb. 6
10:00-12:00 at Redford Library. There are now 30 sites using SAM. Wixom
is the most recent addition.
* Library Directors were invited to sign up for
on-site training for their staff at New Horizons. The due date for
response was 1/14. There has not been a large response, but a number of
people are taking advantage of this service.
* There was a power outage at TLN on December 23,
2007. Angie was happy to report that the UPS worked for the full time
of the outage with no down time detected by the libraries.
* Angie Michelini provided a handout of help desk
statistics showing the number of closed tickets arranged by library
name and category for October thru December 2007. There were
a total of 493 tickets for this three month period.
* New email account requests are now handled via
the helpdesk. There is no longer a need to fill out the paper
internet application and have the policy signed by the user. The paper
form is still available for individual libraries to keep for their own
records if they wish. New users are sent a copy of the policy via email
to their newly activated account.
* Angie recommended that libraries that do not
already have a firewall purchase the appliance offered by TLN. There is
a one-time setup fee of $400 which includes the cost of the hardware,
installation and setup. Annual maintenance cost and monitoring after
the first year would be $100 per year.
* Feb 11, 2008 will be the final migration date for
the new web server. Angie thanked Michael McEvoy for his 9 years of
service to TLN and his contributions to the TLN web site. Michael will
no longer be working for TLN as of Feb. 11. The new site is CMS-based
so updates will be done by Committee chairs and internally at TLN. The
new server is more robust. Derek will be migrating library sites one at
a time to ensure stability of transfer. The new server will be
accessible in the same manner as the old server for libraries who house
their website there.
* Opt-E-Man sites . Derek will be in touch with you
in the next month regarding IP address changes on the Merit network.
Downtime should be negligible, but he will notify you in advance when
the changes are to be made.
Three Year Technology Plan:
* Angie handed out copies of the 2005-2008
Technology Plan and asked for general suggestions on what to add to the
new technology plan.
* Suggestions:
. NCIP compliance for MelCat
. Make catalog more interactive and PDA
accessible
. E-commerce feature for patrons to pay
bills online
. Bandwidth management system
. Calling tree system revamp . suggested
using email to fax technology
. Fiber optic network for all libraries
. Improve SIRSI and network performance
at the head end.
* Email Angie if you have any other
suggestions.
Finalizing Basic and Advanced Competencies:
* Melanie Bell, BRIT showed us the two sections
that had not been finalized. None of the people who were working on
these sections were present at the meeting, so Melanie will finalize
via email.
My Reading Log Feedback:
* The blog has had some activity regarding the logo
images.
* Donna Winter, LVCC demonstrated the
administration module and mentioned the work Andrew has been doing with
importing directly from Amazon and searching by isbn and asin.
Livonia Civic Center Library Tour:
* The library recently launched an intranet using
PBWiki.
* There is a flat screen monitor mounted near the
circulation desk so patrons can see powerpoint slides of upcoming
events at the library. Using an older computer with the new monitor .
uploading updated powerpoint file via flash drive. . No internet
connection.
Sharing Resources:
* Martin Smith, REDF is using UltraVNC for remote
pc access. It works like PC Anywhere, but is more secure. They have
CutePDF setup for printing.
* Michael McEvoy, NORT is using AppGet to
find software updates. AppGet tells you what is out of date and
includes links to the latest file so you can update immediately. Go to
www.app-get.com
